Haji Mohd Hussain Chicken and Fish Fry, Jama Masjid, New Delhi

Haji Mohd Hussain restaurant has just two items on the menu, fried chicken and fried fish. It is the mirror image of Aslam Chicken but fried. Last time when I was roaming around, I found lots of tourists checking out the place on a food walk. I had decided to visit this place during the holy month of Ramzan. You will not be disappointed with the original fried chicken of Old Delhi. Cooked fresh and deep fried in a huge container, this chicken will simply blow you away.

Location of Haji Mohd Hussain

The restaurant is located on Matia Mahal Road. Even though it is well marked on Google maps, you have to be careful locating this place, because this road is crowded with lots and lots of restaurants. It is however easy to find this place as the cooking is done outside and the frying kadhai cannot be easily missed.

To reach there, you can drive down on your two wheeler or four wheeler and park it next to the Meena Bazar parking area. Other, but strongly recommended option is taking the metro and getting down at Chawri Bazar metro station and then taking the e Rickshaw.

About the restaurant and food

Food is simple at best and will be one of the most tasty treats you ever had. Chicken is marinated for a very short time in a mix and then deep fried in a huge kadhai filled with boiling oil. So what you get is a crunchy exterior and a crunchy bone and soft chicken. Fried chicken pieces are served in a plate with a yellow chutney and onions.

Same treatment for fish. Seating is available on the ground floor and the first floor. There is always a rush, specially during the evening hours. So get ready to wait. But not for too long since the customers have their quick bite and leave. Tables and seating is again simple at best. Fried chicken is taken out in batches and served to customers at a frantic speed. You can also have rumali roti to accompany with the chicken. There is a slight variety in the menu, so you can ask the waiters for options. Service again is basic at the best.

The best fried chicken in Jama Masjid, yes for sure. The best fried chicken in New Delhi, well we might have a debate here…
