Is the GoPro 11 Black photography any good?

GoPro 11 Black comes with a larger sensor over its predecessor with the new 8:7 aspect ratio. GoPro is a fantastic action camera, one of its kind. But will it succeed as a still camera among the onslaught of content creators friendly mirrorless cameras? Lets look at some samples.

What does a content creator need?

Recently a few mirrorless cameras were released specifically targeted towards the Tiktokers and Instagrammers.

  • Sony ZV series
  • Nikon Z30
  • Canon EOS R8, R10 and R50

But all of them give a terrible battery life when shooting in 4k. Not to mention the overheating. To make matters worse, the official hand grip of say a Nikon Z30 does not come with a battery. Imagine what a neat arrangement it would have been.

So there is a specific case in point for the traveller who has to make quick vlogging videos. Something handy, small and basically meeting the purpose.

So when the GoPro Hero 11 arrived on scene with the content creators editions, I quickly put it through the paces for some still photography. Here is what I found.

Tech specs

8:7 ration which can be cropped into vertical as well as horizontal format for social media and YouTube.

Larger sensor allows for widest angle called HyperView. This does come with extreme distortion.

24 MP stills can be extracted from videos.

A long lasting Enduro battery which comes standard with GoPro 11 Black.

Still photos in three modes other than Standard which are RAW, HDR and linear.

Both linear and wide modes can be selected with the above modes too.

Verdict

Of course GoPro has still miles to go as far as night photography goes. But when it comes to broad day light or well lit locations, this camera will excel just like the most budget mirrorless.
