New Delhi Railway Station – Show window of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

On a cue of a fellow blogger, I went to check out first hand how New Delhi Railway Station has transformed on the cleanliness and passenger amenities front. Results are astounding. From what I have seen for the last two decades, this is almost supernatural. Decide for yourself.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 02 Oct 2014. It is a five year program which aims to achieve an open Defecation Free (ODF) India by 02 Oct 2019, 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Govt is targeting each household to have a toilet, either through self help or govt financing. As a part of the mission, other projects and cleanliness drives across cities were launched. Public figures were roped in to create awareness.

To develop a competitive spirit, list of cleanest cities is published every year. For the second time in a row, Indore has been announced as the cleanest city in India. In a smart move, Govt of India has tied release of funds to performance.

New Delhi Railway Station

Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the cleanest of all. One of the busiest railway station in India, New Delhi Railway Station is truly a hub. Most tourists have used this railway station one time or the other. One might even give it the title of national railway station.

Cleanliness was seldom a priority for a station having such a foot fall day and night. But this has changed. Indian Railways has taken upon itself the challenging task of modernizing the railway station and keeping it that way. Lifts, escalators, modern amenities and an army of sanitary workers working day and night to keep the premises clean. There is no further need for words, as pictures speak for themselves.
